The Terai area is known as the bread basket of Nepal due to its vast paddy fields yielding and harvesting of rice and crops for the whole country. The Terai belt and its dense jungle was a land of malaria that was eradicated in the early 1960s. From then on, the mountain people began to migrate to the fertile land of the southern country of Terai.
Tharu people are interwoven with the Hindu religion and similar cultures to the Indian predecessors across the border. Tharu are lively people who enjoy various festivals, dancing, singing, and playing traditional instruments. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the cultural programs of Tharu tribes, with various forms of dance.
From Kathmandu, an overland journey to Chitwan National Park premises is approx.181 km/113 miles and takes approx. 5 to 6 hours to reach, depending upon the road conditions on the busy main highway of Nepal. This highway links all of Nepal from West to East and towards the Southern lower Terai belt. The drive leads on the main highway after leaving the Kathmandu Valley suburb with downhill on a winding road. The drive follows the Trisuli River, a popular rafting river for a day or more. During the journey, enjoy the views of Langtang, Ganesh, and Manaslu as far as the Annapurna Himalayas.
The drive diverts from Mugling Bazaar after covering a distance of 110 km. The road follows the Trisuli River right up to Chitwan, a large town of Narayanghat and Bharatpur, the major cities of Chitwan district and Narayani zone. The drive leads through farm villages and towns. It is a great experience to observe rural farm life with dramatic changes in landscapes. The drive heads down to the country’s flatland of Terai, a heavily farmed area. On reaching the town of Tadi, the drive diverts south through farm areas to Sauraha, where all the best hotels and resorts are located, close to the entrance of Chitwan National Park.
Chitwan can be reached from the tourist city Pokhara, as well as with a surge of adrenaline rafting Trisuli River. Visitors can also fly to Chitwan at Bharatpur City Airport on a 25-minute scenic flight. Then, a short drive to reach Chitwan National Park premises at Sauraha.
