It is located in Nepal's far south mid-western Terai, east of the great Karnali River and the fertile Babai River Valley. Bardiya National Park provides excellent habitat for endangered animals like the one-horned rhinoceros, wild elephant, and Royal Bengal Tiger. The park is famous for its herd of black bucks, and freshwater Gangetic Dolphins. At present, Bardiya National Park is home to an extensive population of Royal Bengal Tigers, with more than 125 adult tigers, according to a recent 2022 census. The park also hosts other mammals, such as swamp deer, along with two species of crocodiles: the Gharial crocodile and Marsh Mugger. Endangered birds include the Bengal florican, lesser florican, silver-eared mesia, and Sarus crane.
Bardiya National Park is home to more than 30 different mammals, and over 200 species of birds, with many snakes, lizards, and fish. These wildlife species have been recorded in the park’s forests, grassland, and river habitats.
Food and accommodation are important, besides the best seasons for visiting Nepal’s rural areas. Bardiya National Park due to its remote location around Far South West Nepal, few groups of foreign visitors seldom visit. Over the past years, the influx of visitors has been on the rise. The food items as per the La Carte or set menu from Continental, Chinese, and Indian including Nepali famous Dal, Bhat, with mild seasonal vegetable curry. The food menu lists from breakfast, lunch, and dinner to snack items. Breakfast from oats porridge, including cereals to cornflakes with toast/chapattis and pancake, with a choice of egg variation.
All hotels and lodges provide Internet and Wi-Fi services but slow and disturbing in some places due to weather and conditions of landscape terrains. Nepal is a country of great diversity of landscape and people with their age-old religions, cultures, and heritage. The lowland people of the Terai is populated by the Tharu ethnic tribe, spreading across the country from east to west. The Tharu people migrated to Terai in the early days from Northern India some centuries ago. In the beginning, they were nomads hunting, fishing, and livestock. At present, Tharu has settled permanently engaging in farms and large agricultural products.
The Terai area is known as the bread basket of Nepal due to its vast paddy fields yielding and harvesting of rice and crops for the whole country. The Terai belt and its dense jungle was a land of malaria that was eradicated in the early 1960s. From then on, the mountain people began to migrate to the fertile land of the southern country of Terai.
Tharu people are interwoven with the Hindu religion and similar cultures to the Indian predecessors across the border. Tharu are lively people who enjoy various festivals, dancing, singing, and playing traditional instruments. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the cultural programs of Tharu tribes, with various forms of dance.
From Kathmandu, an overland journey to Bardiya National Park is approx. 568 km/353 miles. It takes more than 10 to 12 hours to reach Bardiya. The easiest and most pleasant way is taking a scenic flight, and the flight duration is less than an hour from Kathmandu to land at Nepalgunj city airport. From Nepalgunj, we take a private drive which is of few hours covering a distance of 85 km/53 miles to reach the lodge at Bardiya, near the national park entrance premises. The Bardiya National Park covers 968 sq. km. and is located in Nepal's Far South Mid-West of Bardiya district and Karnali Zone.
